Technique Tuesday - Frontside Carve 📖 A turn that I’ve never been good at and up until very recently, would still struggle even explaining. This turn is best served on the open face as tight as you can get to the section with the purpose of being a rail turn that holds speed and connects you back into the pocket. Too much engagement with the lip? Potential ejection (full send dismount) off the wave. Too far on the shoulder? Barry Bog-rail and total speed killer. Like most/all rail turns, the money is in the upper body rotation and emphasising the change of direction whilst holding the speed. This sequence is from a recent High Performance Camp w/ the guru @llewellynwhittaker & the local Jersey groms in Portugal. All the kids were putting me to absolute shame in the surf and as usual I had all the excuses: board was too small, rash on my neck, sore throat for a month… and a half! Anyway, they inspired me to learn to surf better and work on what needs improving. Analysing this turn I need to work on opening the body more and trying to have a quick glimpse of the white water to create that torque. Im often doing my best stiff robot impression 🤖 and never seem to get LOW. I also always struggle coming out of the carve as I never lift the board over the white water which kills the speed and the rest of the wave. Theres a list of things that need improving and I plan on experimenting with this turn and my surfing which should produce some good content (&comedy) for everyone. No more soft surfing, head dip claims and 3 to beach drills…. Junior Lifesaver Program returns this Saturday (April 6th) and we are running a taster session for new & returning students. The program is centred around teaching essential sea survival skills & how to train like a beach lifeguard. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in beach ironman races in preparation for our annual big race on June 15th (entry can be found on our website).
